The five-minute holiday: building a backyard that feels like elsewhere
Small shifts, good shade, and one excellent playlist can change the geography of an afternoon.
A holiday mood does not require a boarding pass. It starts with editing the view: move the chair toward the best patch of light, put the phone somewhere you cannot see it, and let one part of the day stay gloriously unplanned.
The most convincing outdoor rooms are not over-designed. They have a place to put a cold glass, something soft underfoot, and enough shade to make staying feel like the obvious choice. Add a striped towel or a bright float and you have a small, portable change of scene.
The final ingredient is a ritual. Make the same drink, play the same first song, or take a slow lap around the pool before you settle in. Five minutes is plenty of time to tell your brain: we are somewhere else now.
